Bud Shank overleden

Inmiddels al weer heel wat jaren geleden ben ik begonnen met het spelen van jazz en improvisatie op dwarsfluit. Omdat ikzelf de dwarsfluit wel een leuk instrument in de jazz vind, maar dit toch in de jazz een wat minder belangrijk instrument is dan bijvoorbeeld de saxofoon, én omdat veel saxofoonspelers "dubbelen" op de fluit, overwoog ik om naast de fluit ook saxofoon te gaan spelen. Maar zou dat niet teveel een aantasting van de kwaliteit van mijn toon betekenen?
Ik besloot wat rond te vragen en stuurde onder andere ook een mailtje (in oktober 2002) naar Bud Shank, een goeie altsaxofonist én fluitist. Ik ontving het volgende mailtje terug:

Dear Roel: Bud is off on tour but I will attempt to answer your email. Bud
completely gave up playing the flute more than a decade ago because he felt
that the instruments interfered with each other and he preferred the alto as
his instrument of choice.
The flute required endless practice which took time away from practicing the
alto. And thus while he was a superb flutist, the alto suffered. Since
giving up the flute, he feels that his alto playing has improved enormously,
and a whole lot of people around the world agree with him. Basically, the
flute and alto co-existed for 20 years because Bud spent most of that time
in the studios which required doubling. Once he left the studios, and Los
Angeles, and returned to being a soloist and bandleader, his alto playing
asserted itself and has continued to do so ever since. Also, he has spent
much more time playing the piano and this has greatly assisted his
composing. I suggest you pick up his new CD "On The Trail" to hear how he

Helaas, Bud Shank is 2 april overleden op 82-jarige leeftijd. En ik ben toch begonnen met het spelen van de (alt)saxofoon naast de dwarsfluit omdat anderen (onder andere Lew Tabackin, die ik ook een mailtje stuurde, en mijn huidige leraar Peter Guidi) vonden dat dit wel prima te doen was en ik het nu eenmaal heel graag wilde, een beslissing waar ik overigens geen seconde spijt van heb gehad, al betekent het inderdaad dat je per instrument minder tijd hebt om te studeren (en ik vind al dat ik eigenlijk véél te weinig tijd heb)
Nooit geweten overigens dat hij het was die die fantastische (alt)fluitsolo speelde op "California dreaming" van The Mamas & The Papas ...
