Heaven up here: Engeland 1981

Eerst was er punk en New wave kwam daar uit voort. Een muzikale verdieping, met de energie van punk, maar eigengereider. Met haar dogma’s, toegegeven. Aan lange gitaarsoli werd niet gedaan, de bas was prominent aanwezig, keyboards waren “all over the place” en de drums “roffelden” vooral. En toch zijn dat cliche’s, want saxofoon en zelfs speelgoedinstrumenten waren eveneens vertegenwoordigd. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat de Wave-stroming duurde van 1978 tot, zeg, 1988. Daarna kwamen termen als “post-punk” en “indie” in trek.

Want de platen waren divers; elke grote band bezat een eigen geluid. Het jaar 1981 vormde het hoogtepunt: de rijkste oogst van de Engelse Wave in al haar glorie. Zelfs nu nog hebben de beste platen uit die tijd een eigen smoel, dat niet zou misstaan anno 2009. Nieuwe groepen als Interpol, The Editors en Franz Ferdinand grijpen niet voor niets terug op op de rijke jaren tachtig.
